The Open Society Foundations

Historical name: The Open Society Institute (OSI), renamed to Open Society Foundations (OSF) in 2011.

The OSI was created in 1993 as a private operating and grant making foundation to support similar foundations already in existence. According to its website, the OSI is working to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. Part of the focus of the OSI is to support public health reform, advocating for transparency and fair distribution of natural resource riches, and improving the lives of people with challenges in marginalized communities.

The website states that OSI builds alliances across borders on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. It has helped to encourage many organizations working on transparency in government. In particular, it has launched and helped to launch institutions such as the Revenue Watch Institute working on revenue transparency in the exploitation of natural resources.

To achieve its mission, the website states that the OSI seeks to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media.

It is further stated that the OSI has expanded the activities of the Soros foundations network to encompass the United States and more than 60 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Each Soros foundation relies on the expertise of boards composed of eminent citizens who determine individual agendas based on local priorities.
